Clarifying Credentials

Degrees, certificates, badges, certifications…many different types of credentials claim to certify knowledge and competency, but workers and employers are increasingly uncertain about their quality. The George Washington Institute of Public Policy (GWIPP) at George Washington University is partnering with the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) to explore the development of transparent standards that would demonstrate the quality and value of credentials.

This project, funded by Lumina Foundation, will compile information on existing standards, identify gaps, and create a vision and “roadmap” for establishing additional necessary standards and assessment systems. WDQC will participate on the project’s steering committee along with other key stakeholders from business, education and government. The steering committee is scheduled to begin meeting early in 2014.

 “Widely accepted standards would provide a common framework and language for describing key aspects of credentials, including competencies, assessments, scopes of application, relationships with other credentials and market value,” said Dr. Stephen Crawford, project director and a research professor, on the GWIPP web site.

ANSI, a non-profit organization, has previously organized collaborative processes to improve standards in several fields, including health information technology and energy efficiency. This project will help determine how and whether ANSI could promote the adoption of standards and assessment systems across a wide range of credentials.
