A December 2016 report from the Urban Institute, Choice Deserts: How Geography Limits the Potential Impact of Earnings Data on Higher Education analyzed data from students who graduated from Virginia high schools in 2011 and 2012. The study indicates that wage data may not be as helpful to students looking to make decisions about their education as previously assumed, because many students lack educational options from which to choose in the first place. However, the study does note a number of other ways in which wage data can serve students, institutional leaders, and policymakers.
